Carihuairazo is an extinct volcano in Ecuador, in the western Andes. It is located only 10 km from Chimborazo. It has three peaks; its main summit that reaches 5,018 m, and two smaller peaks, "Mocha" with 4,960 m and "Josefinos" of 4,900 m.
Its name comes from the Quichua words cari ("man"), hauaira ("wind") and razu ("snow"), and according to local legends it lost a battle with the taita Chimborazo to get the love of the mama Tungurahua; for this reason its crater is headless.
It is a mountain very visited by climbers because it is a relatively easy ascent and allows a good acclimatization to later attack higher and more difficult peaks, being its first ascent in 1951.
